VOODOO DRUMMER “Aristophanes’ FROGS” ft. Blaine L. Reininger & Martyn Jacques
“Aristophanes’ FROGS” is the new composition by Greek artist Voodoo Drummer.
Inspired by the play “The Frogs” written by the Ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes, Voodoo Drummer has created an Afro-Dionysian Suite in 3 movements.
Voodoo Drummer: Drums & Percussion
with Stavros Parginos: Cello
- Blaine L. Reininger (Tuxedomoon): Violin
Special guest: Martyn Jacques (Tiger Lillies) on Aristophanes’ famous line from the play.
1st Movement:
Athens, Greece 405 B.C.
DIONYSUS decides to bring the greatest playwright back from the dead.
(The drum beats to an evocative 5/8 rhythm, while the cello carries the melody)
2nd Movement:
CHARON ferries him across the lake where FROGS scream!
(The melody changes slightly in a 7/8 rhythm. Vre ke ke kex the frogs croak!)
3rd Movement:
Finally, he arrives to HADES, the underworld.
(No melody there, only terrifying sounds, screaming strings and polyrhythms)
Ignoring Aristophanes, Dionysus ultimately decides to stay in Hell.
